Work on the Honolulu-bound lanes of Kalaniana'ole Highway, starting at Castle Medical Center, began yesterday. Repaving will be done one lane at a time, which means one lane between the medical center and Kapa'a Quarry Road will be closed weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Having finished repaving the Kailua-bound lanes of Kalaniana'ole Highway between Castle Junction and Castle Medical Center, state contractors are now ready to work in the opposite direction.

Repaving begins this week on the town-bound lanes of the highway. That means one lane will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday between the medical center and Kapa'a Quarry Road.

Although the Kailua-bound work did not cause major traffic tie-ups, state officials say traffic in the town-bound direction is more consistently busy throughout the day. That means drivers coming from Kailua or Waimanalo should allow for extra travel time during the construction, say officials at the Department of Transportation.
