Council rejects Waimea deal

Advertiser Staff

The City Council voted 9-0 today to reject a proposed legal settlement that would have split ownership of Waimea Valley between the city and a private landowner.

The city now will continue its effort to acquire the 1,875-acre valley through the condemnation process. A trial that will determine how much the city will pay for the land is scheduled to begin the week of Feb. 13

Yesterday's vote reversed an earlier council action in which a council committee voted 5-4 on Nov. 21 to give preliminary approval to the settlement proposal.

The proposal called for the city to take ownership of the valley's front 300 acres, with the remaining 1,575 acres being kept by landowner Attractions Hawaii and investor Christian Wolffer.
