Man dies in police custody

A man who was found unconscious in a holding cell at police headquarters on Monday died at a hospital at about 11:05 last night, police said.

The man, who police described as a "transient," was arrested about 6:40 a.m. Monday in connection with a series of assaults at a North Pauahi Street apartment building. Police said they chased the man on foot through the Maunakea Marketplace and used pepper spray to subdue him on the sidewalk along North Hotel Street.

The man was taken to the main police station on Beretania Street and was in the cellblock when he was found unconscious. Police said the man was taken by ambulance to a hospital, arrived in critical condition and appeared to be under the influence of drugs and or alcohol. Police said they were told the man had been drinking all night before the reported assaults.

The city Department of the Medical Examiner had not identified the man this morning.



Police arrest man with knife in Kalihi

Police were sent to a housing complex in Kalihi last night after receiving a report that a man was threatening a security guard with a knife. Police arrived about 9:10 p.m. and arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of terroristic threatening. No injuries were reported.



Girl, 15, arrested in threats at group home

A 15-year-old girl who is a resident of a group home in Manoa was arrested yesterday for allegedly repeatedly threatening to kill a 16-year-old girl at the home during the past month, police said.

Police arrested the younger girl on suspicion of harassment and turned her over to authorities at an unspecified detention home.



Woman, 24, arrested in suspected burglary

A 24-year-old woman was arrested at about 3:30 p.m. yesterday in Renton Village after a resident reported spotting the woman climbing from the window of a nearby home then held her until police arrived at the home near the corner of Kolowaika Drive and Wailewa Place. The woman was in possession of what appeared to be a number of stolen items. The homeowner said the items police recovered had been taken from the home.

Police arrested the woman on suspicion of burglary. The recovered items were returned to the homeowner.



Police arrest man sleeping in stolen car

Police arrested a 26-year-old man in the Wai'anae area after they found him asleep at the wheel of a car that had been reported stolen.

Police received a report about 12:45 p.m. that a man was slumped over the wheel of the car stopped at an intersection with the motor running. Officers arrived, learned from dispatchers that the car had been reported stolen, awakened the driver and arrested him on suspicion of auto theft.



Woman says ex-boyfriend tried to steal her purse, phone

A 26-year-old man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend and tried to take her purse and cell phone.

The former girlfriend, 22, told police she was walking along Kuhio Avenue about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when the ex-boyfriend approached, grabbed her buttocks and tried to take her purse.

Police said the woman was able to hang onto the purse and walked across the street only to have the suspect follow. They said the man then tried to take the woman's cell phone away, but she was able to fend him off.

At that point, another person who saw what was happening, doused the ex-boyfriend with pepper spray and he ran away. Police were called and arrested the man on suspicion of misdemeanor sexual assault and harassment.



Three arrested in suspected theft case

Police arrested a man, 25, a girl, 14, and a woman, 23, in Makakilo early yesterday morning after allegedly finding stolen goods in the car the three were in.

Police received a report about a possible theft in progress sometime after 3:30 a.m. and saw a car that matched the description of the car said to be involved in the burglary. Police ordered the driver to pull over near Palailai and Akaula streets. Inside the car were items taken during a car break-in, police said.

The three people in the car were arrested on suspicion of detaining stolen property.
