Jack Johnson, slack key albums nominated for Grammys

by Derek Paiva
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Slack key guitar albums dominated four of five nomination slots for the second best Hawaiian music album award and North Shore-based singer/songwriter Jack Johnson scored nods in two other categories in Grammy award announcements today.

The nominees for best Hawaiian music album are:

 • "Slack Key Dreams of the Ponomoe" by Kapono Beamer (Kapono Beamer Enterprises)

 • "Sweet & Lovely" by Raiatea Helm (Raiatea Helm Records)

 • "Kiho'alu - Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar" by Ledward Ka'apana (Rhythm & Roots Records)

 • "Slack Key Guitar: The Artistry of Sonny Lim" by Sonny Lim (Palm Records)

 • "Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar - Vol. 1," a multi-artist compilation, produced by Daniel Ho, Paul Konwiser and Wayne Wong (Daniel Ho Creations)

Johnson became the first Hawai'i born and raised musician ever to score a best male pop vocal performance nomination. The nod was for "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" from his CD "In Between Dreams" (Brushfire Records/Universal Records). Johnson also scored a nomination for best pop collaboration with vocals for the song "Gone Going," on which he teamed up with the Black Eyed Peas. The song is from the Black Eyed Peas' CD "Monkey Business" (A&M Records).

These and nominees in all 108 Grammy categories were revealed by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences this morning.

The 48th annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be broadcast from Los Angeles on Feb. 8, 2005, on CBS.

The winner of last year's first best Hawaiian music album Grammy was the multi-artist compilation "Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2" on Palm Records.
