Matson to raise fuel surcharge to 15 percent Jan. 1

Advertiser Staff

Matson Navigation Co. said today it will increase its fuel surcharge to 15 percent from 13 percent effective Jan. 1 for its Hawai'i and Guam/Northern Mariana Islands service.

The increase is needed to help cover the cost of rising bunker fuel prices, which have increased more than 21 percent during the past three months, said Dave Hoppes, Matson's senior vice president for ocean services.

It is the fourth increase in the fuel surcharged levied by Matson this year. Matson in November also increased its basic shipping rate and terminal handling charge.

Horizon Lines, Matson's major competitor, has raised its fuel surcharge three times this year. It also raised its basic shipping rate and terminal handling charge last month.
