Maui's FirstLight to screen Oscar hopefuls

Johnny Depp stars in "The Libertine," screening at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center as part of the Maui Film Festival's FirstLight showcase of major features and documentaries that have significant Oscar-winning buzz. Some FirstLight films have yet to open widely in Honolulu. These include "Proof," starring Gwyneth Paltrow, and "The Squid and the Whale," starring Jeff Daniels. Other major films on the schedule include "King Kong," "Brokeback Mountain," "Munich," "Transamerica," "The Producers," "Casanova" and "The New World."

"The Libertine," about the decadent second Earl of Rochester, is rated R (114 minutes). Also screening Wednesday: "Paradise Now," (5 p.m., PG-13, 90 minutes), a look at the roots of unrest in the Middle East. Screening Thursday: "Jarhead" (5 p.m., R, 123 minutes); and "Memoirs of a Geisha" (7:30 p.m., PG-13, 137 minutes).

FirstLight continues through Jan. 1. Admission per screening is $10 general, $5 children younger than 12 (for G, PG and PG-13 films). Details about FirstLight are at www.mauifilmfestival.com.
