Buddhist bishop to give free talk

The Rev. Akinori Imai, bishop of the Higashi Hongwanji Hawaii District, will speak at a free seminar, "Buddhism, Jodo Shinshu, and Buddhist Counseling," 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 17.

The lecture will be held at the Buddhist Study Center, 1436 University Ave.

Imai has a Jungian counseling background and formerly worked with the Rev. Dr. Ryo Imamura at the East-West Counseling Center in San Francisco. Before he was assigned to Hawai'i three years ago, he was the resident minister at the Berkeley Higashi Hongwanji Temple.

He'll discuss concepts of Buddhist counseling and present ideas about developing professional counseling services based on a Buddhist or Shin Buddhist perspective.

Lunch can be ordered ahead for $5.

ISLAM, OTHER FAITHS EXPLORED

Aslam Syed, visiting professor at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's school of Hawaiian, Pacific and Asian studies, will discuss "Between Learning and Teaching: Island and Other World Religions."

The free lecture will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu, 2500 Pali Highway.

The lecture focuses on what took place when Muslims interacted with followers of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Jainism, Judaism and Zoroastrianism. It's sponsored by All Believers Network, First Unitarian Church of Honolulu, the Inter-Faith Alliance of Hawai'i and the Interfaith Open Table, Milun (Association for Promoting South Asian culture) and the UH school where Syed is teaching.

ORGAN CONCERT TOMORROW

The refurbished Moller organ at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Kaimuki — built in 1979 by the now-defunct M.P. Moller Company, then one of three major American organ builders — will be featured in concert.

The free hourlong organ concert starts at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow with one of Epiphany's organists, Donald Matsumori, playing chorale prelude settings from the liturgical year, including works by J.G. Walther, Bach, Flor Peeters and John Stanley.
