Hawai'i women prevail

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team's first non-conference road trip in 12 years was a success.

The Rainbow Wahine completed a two-game sweep of a California road trip yesterday by beating Santa Clara, 73-69.

Brittany Grice had a career-high 20 points and 16 rebounds, and Amy Sanders matched a season high with 20 points for Hawai'i (5-2), which won at San Francisco on Thursday.

Hawai'i's Pam Tambini, a San Jose, Calif., native, had her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

It was the first time the Rainbows won consecutive road games since beating Boise State and UTEP in Western Athletic Conference games in 2003.

With 16 seconds left and UH clinging to a one-point lead, Sanders stole a Broncos pass and scored on a layup. Santa Clara failed to convert on its next possession and Janevia Taylor's free throw with four seconds remaining sealed the win.

Santa Clara (2-5) entered the game averaging 82 points and nearly 11 3-pointers per game. UH held the Broncos to 7 of 21 from 3-point range.

Michelle Cozad scored seven points, 14 below her season average.

The Rainbows had 55 rebounds, including 28 on the offensive end.

Hawai'i went on a 15-3 run midway through the first half for an 11-point lead before taking a 36-30 advantage at the break.

The Rainbow Wahine's next game will be Friday against Campbell at the Stan Sheriff Center.
