Surprising Tennessee, Santa Clara in semifinals

No. 17 Tennessee upset No. 8 Missouri, 30-28, 30-27, 25-30, 30-17, in a regional final at State College, Pa. yesterday, to earn its first trip to the NCAA volleyball final four.

The Lady Vols will play No. 3 Washington in a semifinal on Thursday at the San Antonio Alamodome. No. 1 Nebraska will play No. 11 Santa Clara in the other semifinal. The NCAA title game is on Saturday.

In regional finals yesterday:

  • Kristen Andre had 19 kills and Kelsey Fautsch added 16 for Tennessee (25-8). The Lady Vols beat No. 2 Penn State to reach the regional final. Missouri beat No. 6 Hawai'i.

  • Washington (30-1) beat Wisconsin, 30-28, 30-25, 30-23, at College Station, Texas. It will be the Huskies second consecutive trip to the final four.

  • Nebraska (32-1) defeated No. 4 Florida, 30-26, 30-24, 30-16, at Omaha, Neb., to reach the Huskers' ninth NCAA semifinals.

  • Santa Clara (27-4) outlasted No. 5 Arizona, 22-30, 30-24, 30-26, 15-30, 17-15, in Stanford, Calif.
