Tiger Woods to skip Maui tournament

By Larry DiTore

Top-ranked Tiger Woods will skip the PGA Tour's season-opening event on Maui next month to relax and spend time with his family.

Woods said on his Web site that he won't compete in the Mercedes Championships in January, an event he won in 1997 and 2000.

"I just need some time away from the game," Woods said. "It's been a long season and I have played a lot of golf. I need a break."

Woods, who finished in a tie for 14th in the World Challenge exhibition yesterday, didn't say when he will make his 2006 debut on the world's leading golf tour.

The Mercedes Championships will be played at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, on Maui, from Jan. 5-8.
