Speedy JC receiver to sign with Warriors

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i football team today received a verbal commitment from a speedy wide receiver.

Carroll Joseph "C.J." Hawthorne of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College told The Advertiser he will accept a football scholarship from the Warriors. Hawthorne said he will put his commitment in writing on Dec. 21, the first day junior college players may sign binding national letters of intent.

Hawthorne, who is 5 feet 11 1/2 and 165 pounds, can run 40 yards in 4.44 seconds.

He said he turned down offers from Troy, Southern Mississippi and Marshall.

"I love Hawai'i," he said. "It's an awesome place. I love everything about Hawai'i and the (football) program. I love the people. I love the island. I have nothing but good feelings about Hawai'i. That's why I committed to Hawai'i."
