ADVERTISER CHRISTMAS FUND
Deaf mother of 5 wishes for clothes, toys, TV

Help our neighbors in need

By Loren Moreno
Advertiser Staff Writer

When her husband was killed by a drunken driver in 2004, K.B. became a single parent to her five children.

Since then, 37-year-old K.B., who is deaf, has struggled.

For a while, K.B. was living in a shelter with her children. Then she was referred to a transitional shelter and has been receiving services from Hawai'i Centers for Independent Living because of her disability.

The family's caseworker said K.B. is hoping to find permanent housing for her family.

K.B. has been working full-time but is hoping to find a job with some flexibility so she can also take care of her children.

When K.B. has to work at night, her two teenage children help care for their siblings, ages 4, 2 and 16 months.

K.B. said her children's clothes are worn out, and she doesn't have the money to buy them new things.

For Christmas, K.B.'s teenage daughter and son would like new outfits they can wear to school.

Her younger children would like toys.

K.B. would also like a television with a closed-caption feature so that she can watch shows and movies with her family.

Our anonymous Santa will match the first $25 of each donation to the Christmas Fund.

Christmas Fund donations are used for families who need help through the holidays. Any money remaining after the holidays will be used to help those in need throughout the year.
