Police Beat: Stolen moped recovered after man runs traffic light

A 35-year-old man was arrested yesterday morning after police officers spotted him driving a moped that a 49-year-old woman had reported stolen.

Police said two officers on routine patrol in Makiki saw the moped rider run a red light about 5 p.m. and ordered the driver to pull over.

On closer inspection, the officers could see that the moped's ignition had been "punched." A check with police dispatchers showed the license plate on the moped did not match up with it's vehicle identification number and that the make, model and color of the moped were different than the one the license plate was issued to.

Police contacted the moped's registered owner, who said it was missing from where she had last parked it.

The man found operating the moped was then arrested for suspicion of unauthorized control of a motor vehicle.

Couple arrested in stolen car face theft, drug charges

A man in his 30s and a woman believed to be in her 20s were arrested in a Waikiki hotel parking lot at about 12:30 p.m. yesterday in a car that had been reported stolen.

Police said after arresting the pair for suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, it was determined they had charged their hotel stay on a credit card that had been reported stolen and a search of their room turned up illegal drugs.

That led to further arrests for suspicion of fraudulent use of a credit card, identity theft and third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs.

Listeners help retrieve stolen truck

Quick work by radio listeners and police brought a quick end to a stolen truck incident yesterday afternoon.

Police said the truck's owner, a 37-year-old man, parked in at a Nanakuli beach park to go paddling. When he returned to shore, he found the truck missing and called police and a radio station to report the theft.

Police said an anonymous person saw the truck being driven along in the Leeward Coast area and called authorities.

Officers caught up with it a few minutes later and arrested the 37-year-old woman behind the wheel for suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

Man arrested for allegedly kidnapping, terrorizing girlfriend

A 24-year-old Wai'anae man was arrested yesterday for allegedly kidnapping and terrorizing his girlfriend the night before.

The 18-year-old girlfriend, also from Wai'anae, told police her boyfriend picked her up about 2:30 a.m. Sunday at a family party and began accusing her of cheating on him.

The woman told police her boyfriend hit her about 10 times while driving her to three different location in Wai'anae and Kunia and threatening to kill her.

The woman called police after being dropped off and they arrested the suspect at his home for suspicion of kidnapping, multiple counts of abusing a family or household member and second-degree terroristic threatening.
