The University of Hawai'i-Manoa athletic department has reopened its four-month search for a No. 2 administrator after at least one interviewee turned the associate athletic director's job down and another withdrew, officials said.

Of the 69 applicants for the position, UH brought in two candidates recommended by the five-member screening committee and neither has taken the job.

Curt Hamakawa, a Big Island native who is the director of international relations for the U.S. Olympic Committee, said he turned down the job after, "we couldn't arrive at a mutually agreeable package."

Through a press release, UH athletic director Herman Frazier said: "Unfortunately, we were unable to come to terms on a complete benefits and financial package with our finalist. Therefore, we will continue our search for the best possible candidate to fill this position."

The other interviewee, who reportedly had connections with USA Track and Field, withdrew.

The pay for Tom Sadler, who resigned as associate AD in August to go into private business in Arizona, was listed at $110,736. Sadler held the position for about 2 1/2 years.

Frazier declined further comment on the process but it is believed the re-opening window is for 10 days and will conclude Dec. 21.

The posting for the position said the associate AD "serves as deputy to the athletics director and assists in the total operation of the athletic department — its programs, personnel, budget, finance, facilities, student affairs, publicity and public relations."
