State cracks down on sex offenders on registry

By MIKE GORDON

The state attorney general is cracking down on convicted sex offenders who have not complied with the state's new registration law, indicting nine men and warning several hundred others that they face certain prosecution if they do not comply with the state's new law.

Two of the nine were arrested Tuesday. If convicted — and Attorney General Mark Bennett promised convictions today at a press conference — they could go to prison for five years.

Bennett's office also mailed letters today to the last-known addresses for 274 sex offenders who have failed to register. They are being told they have until Jan. 13, 2006 to or face prosecution.

Another 344 offenders have also been listed on the state sex offender web site — www.sexoffenders.hawaii.gov — for being in non-compliance. Bennett said he hopes the public will help law enforcement officials locate them and urged people with information to call 587-3100.
