One killed in Hana plane crash

Advertiser Staff

One person was killed when a single-engine aircraft crashed in the forest above Hana, Maui, this afternoon.

Hana police and fire responded to a report of a possible brush fire at about 3:50 p.m. six miles southwest of Hana Airport, police said. The fire was reported by an aircraft passing over the area, police said.

A private helicopter pilot also flew over the site and said the smoke was coming from a downed aircraft. A Federal Aviation Administration official confirmed tonight that one person had died in the crash.

Police said the Cessna aircraft was owned by Maui Aviators Flight School.
