Open-mike nights are hit-and-miss. Call me and I'll tell you about the dude in the lime beret who sang Neil Diamond's "Cracklin' Rosie" in between his own god-awful spoken word at a Waikiki open-mike night. Or the fiftysomething who read the lyrics of Snoop Dogg's "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)" as if rehearsing for "King Lear" ... and killed.

For tomorrow night's Andy Bumatai-hosted night at Jazz Minds Art & Cafe ÷ better memorize "Gin & Juice"! Pick up the mike and the $10 cover is waived. Starts 8 p.m. at 1661 Kapi'olani Blvd.

TREE ORNAMENT FUNDRAISER OFF TO SPLENDID START

The Honolulu Advertiser's third annual "Creations for a Cause" fundraiser is on a roll, with bids for two ornaments at $250 each. From a koa-and-maple star to a Christmas plum-pudding piece, there's something for every tree.

Visit http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/current/il/ornaments05 to place a bid or track the latest bids. Bidding runs through 1 p.m. Monday; winners will be notified Tuesday.

Proceeds go to the Advertiser Christmas Fund, which donates the money to Helping Hands Hawai'i to assist families with rent, utilities or food.

FINAL WORD

Miki Mia | the waxer-actor in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," on waxing co-star Steve Carell, to The Associated Press

"I think it was the longest and hairiest person I've ever worked on. I couldn't find his skin or nipple at all. ... I think he was in so much pain, the whole bed was soaking wet from his sweat."

Correction: The date for the open-mike night hosted by Andy Bumatai was incorrect in a previous version of this column.
