Rainbow Wahine roll past Campbell

The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team gave Campbell and scorekeepers a workout yesterday.

Brittany Grice scored a team-high 16 points and Hawai'i coach Jim Bolla played his entire available roster in a convincing 80-64 non-conference victory over Campbell.

It was the highest point total this season for the Rainbow Wahine (7-2), who won their fifth consecutive game before a crowd of 455 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

"It was nice to have some people see us, and get a glimpse of what we're capable of," Grice said. "We're going to keep doing what we're doing, and hopefully people come out and watch us."

Hawai'i played without senior Amy Sanders, who was sick. Sanders played just 13 minutes in Friday's 69-59 victory over Campbell (3-6) from Buies Creek, N.C.

"I think it's a virus, something I caught on the Mainland when we were traveling," said Sanders, who complained of lightheadedness and dizziness yesterday. "I'll be OK. I just need to go home, get some good food in me, and rest."

The Rainbow Wahine used 15 players, and led by as many as 31 points. They played with a 20-point lead for the majority of the second half.

"We just got on a little roll," Bolla said. "It was good to get a lot of people in. It's the first time I've been able to get everyone in during a game."

Hawai'i's Janevia Taylor scored 13 points, Saundra Cariaga a career-high 10 and Tanya Smith added 10 rebounds. Adrienne Rieley led Campbell with 18 points.

"I just think we're all clicking right now," Taylor said. "We all know our roles on the court."

In the first half, Hawai'i engineered a 20-1 run for a commanding 38-9 lead, and took a 45-16 advantage at intermission.

The Rainbow Wahine increased their lead to 31 points early in the second half. Campbell cut the lead to 55-37 only to see Hawai'i go on a 14-6 surge for a 69-43 advantage.

"I thought certainly the second half was a different story," Campbell coach Wanda Watkins said. "But we dug such a deep hole. Against a team that good, it's tough coming back from that kind of deficit."

UH outscored the Lady Camels, 44-18, in the paint, and outrebounded them, 46-27.

Note: Campbell senior forward Dasha Green fractured her right small toe on Friday and did not play last night.
