Rainbow Warriors stop Loyola Marymount, 66-63

Associated Press

Ahmet Gueye, Matt Lojeski and Julian Sensley finished with 14 points each as Hawai'i rallied past Loyola Marymount 66-63 tonight in the first round of the Rainbow Classic at Stan Sheriff Center.

After trailing by as many as eight points early in the second half, Hawai'i (5-2) took the lead for good on a layup by Sensley with 4:04 left to make it 59-58.

The Lions (3-7) had a shot clock violation on the next play, and after UH's Chris Botez failed to make both of his free throw attempts, Gueye came up with the ball during the scramble for the rebound and was fouled as his putback went in.

Gueye hit the free throw with 3:10 remaining to give UH a 62-58 lead.

Turnovers plagued LMU down the stretch as the Lions turned the ball over with a 3-point deficit and less than two minute left in the game. After a Hawai'i turnover, the Lions had their third shot clock violation of the half with 50 seconds left.

Sensley converted one of two free throws with 34 seconds remaining to give UH a 64-60 lead, but Brandon Worthy converted a 3-point play with 14 seconds left to cut the deficit to 64-63 with 14 seconds to go.

Hawai''s Dominic Waters hit two free throws with 11 seconds left and Botez blocked a 3-point attempt by Worthy to finish the game.

Matthew Knight led the Lions with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Worthy added 17.
