Tiger shark attack closes Maui beach

Advertiser Staff

A Maui beach was closed indefinitely today after a swimmer was bitten by a shark.

Jonathan Genant, 29, from San Diego, Calif., was swimming about 200 yards offshore of Keawakapu Beach near Wailea on south Maui when he was bitten about 11:45 a.m., fire and county officials said.

None of his injuries was life-threatening. His left pinky finger and part of his left ring finger were bitten off and he was treated on the beach.

Officials said Genant was swimming alone.

Genant is a computer scientist and a former triathlete.

The fire department helicopter spotted a 10- to 12-foot tiger shark in the area shortly after the attack, the fire department said.
