Man, 89, dies after being hit in crosswalk

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu police have opened a negligent homicide investigation after an 89-year-old Kane'ohe man was killed while crossing the street this morning, police said.

Alcohol was not a factor, police said, but speed may have been.

At 5:45 a.m., the man was heading east in a marked crosswalk on Kamehameha Highway about one-tenth of a mile north of Lilipuna Road when he was hit by a 1999 white Ford pickup truck.

He was taken to the Castle Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 6:26 a.m. The man is the 75th traffic fatality on O'ahu this year compared to 68 at this time last year.

The pickup was driven by a 26-year-old man who was uninjured. He was not arrested by police.
