Shark sighting closes Maui beach

Advertiser Staff

KIHEI, Maui — A shark sighting today has closed another stretch of South Maui shoreline.

At 11 a.m., a Maui Fire Department helicopter spotted an 8-foot tiger shark about 200 yards off Kama'ole Beach Park II. Officials said beaches from Cove Park to Polo Beach — some of the resort area's most popular beaches — will be closed until further notice.

Yesterday, the coastline from Polo Beach in Wailea to Kama'ole Beach Park III in Kihei was closed after a swimmer was attacked by a tiger shark off Keawakapu Beach. Jonathan Genant, 29, of San Diego, lost the pinkie finger on his left hand and part of his ring finger in the attack.

A 10- to 12-foot shark was spotted in the area shortly after the incident.
