Family found hiding in barn

Two parents who defied a court order to turn their two children over to the state in May were found hiding out in a Waimanalo chicken barn yesterday, police said.

The children were found, unharmed, with their parents. They are now in the custody of the state, police said.

On May 4, a social worker from state Child Welfare Services reported to police that the parents of two children who were ordered by a family court judge to relinquish custody were not cooperating. The parents, age 27 and 30, went "into hiding and would not return phone calls or inform the state about their intentions, police said.

The parents and children evaded state officials for more than six months.

Yesterday, police received information the family may be hiding on a chicken farm in Waimanalo. Officers responded and found the family of four hiding in a barn filled with chickens.

The parents were arrested on suspicion of two counts of custodial interference, a class "C" felony. They have been released pending investigation, police said.

If convicted, each faces up to 5 years in jail and a $5,000 fine.



Man arrested after tossing beer bottle out of car

A 23-year-old Honolulu man was arrested yesterday after he threw a bottle of beer through the window of a moving car, police said.

A 25-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman told police the bottle hit the window door panel, bounced into the 25-year-old's car and shattered against the back window. The 25-year-old was cut by the shattering glass, police said.

The 36-year-old woman said the 23-year-old also kicked her.

He was arrested on suspicion of one count of criminal property damage in the first degree and one count of criminal property damage in the third degree, police said.



Man allegedly steals game console, cell phone

A 28-year-old Honolulu man was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of stealing a 19-year-old's personal gaming console and his cell phone.

At 6:45 a.m. Tuesday the 19-year-old let the 28-year-old into his home on Kamohoali'i Street. The man picked up the 19-year-old's Sony PSP, with permission, and started playing. The man also asked the 19-year-old if he could use his cell phone, police said.

Later, while the 19-year-old was occupied, the 28-year-old walked out with is phone and Sony PSP.

The 28-year-old was later seen on Makuahine Place. Police were called and the man was arrested on suspicion of second degree theft, police said.
