World pro tour starts Feb. 28 in Australia

Surfing's World Championship Tour for 2006 will feature 12 events for men and 10 for women.

The men's tour will start on Feb. 28 with the Quiksilver Pro at Queensland, Australia. There also are events in Tahiti, Fiji, Mexico, South Africa, Japan, California, France, Spain and Brazil.

The tour will end in Hawai'i with the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters in December.

The women's tour will also start on Feb. 28 with the Roxy Pro at Queensland, Australia.

The women's tour will end with two events in Hawai'i — the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, and the Billabong Pro Maui at Honolua Bay.

The WCT events determine the world champions. The men's WCT is restricted to 45 surfers; the women's WCT is restricted to 17.

Florida's Kelly Slater won his record seventh world championship in 2005. Australia's Chelsea Georgeson won her first women's title in 2005.

Hawai'i surfers on the men's 2006 tour are Andy Irons, Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr., Roy Powers and Pancho Sullivan.

Hawai'i surfers on the women's 2006 tour are Megan Abubo, Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly.
