Northern Iowa surges by HPU

LAS VEGAS — Ben Jacobson scored 19 points to lead Northern Iowa past Division II Hawai'i Pacific, 81-47, yesterday in the third round of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic at the Valley High School gym.

Grant Stout and Erick Crawford each had 11 points for the Panthers (9-1), who outscored Hawai'i Pacific 45-18 in the second half.

Adam Snyder led the Sea Warriors (1-8) with nine points. Joseph Ison and Donnell Dobbins each had seven points.

Today, the Sea Warriors face Florida A&M University, which lost to Tennessee Tech, 66-65, earlier in the day. Tip-off is 8:30 a.m. Hawai'i time.

NO. 3 VILLANOVA 98, LA SALLE 57

VILLANOVA, Pa. — Allan Ray hit six 3-pointers and scored 21 points, and Randy Foye scored 20, keeping the host Wildcats (8-0) undefeated with a rout of the Explorers (7-1).

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Joakim Noah had 18 points and six blocked shots and the host Gators held the Hurricanes (6-5) scoreless over the final 2:11 to improve to 11-0 and set a school record for consecutive wins to open a season.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Kevin Pittsnogle scored 25 points, Johannes Herber added a career-high 21, and the visiting Mountaineers (7-3) ended the game with a 19-3 run to romp past the Sooners (6-2).

ST. LOUIS — Adam Morrison scored seven of his 18 points in the final 4 1/2 minutes to help the visiting Bulldogs (9-2) turn back the Billikens (5-5) for their fifth straight victory.

AUSTIN, Texas — LaMarcus Aldridge had 21 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, and the host Longhorns (9-2) rebounded from two straight blowout losses with an easy victory over the Bobcats (1-8).

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Engin Atsur scored 15 points, including two free throws with 25 seconds to play for a 67-64 lead, and Ronald Steele's 3-point shot rimmed out with 9 seconds left as the visiting Wolfpack (9-1) held off the Crimson Tide (5-4).

RICHMOND, Va. — Justin Gray scored 21 points and Eric Williams added 13, helping the Demon Deacons (9-2) hold off the Spiders (5-5), who had an early 22-4 lead.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Byron Eaton scored 16 points, including 10 during a game-closing 22-7 run, as the host Cowboys (8-3) handed the Volunteers (6-1) their first loss of the season.

LOGAN, Utah — Nate Harris scored a career-high 27 points, Cass Matheus added 18, and the host Aggies (6-3) saw their 24-point second-half lead shrink to seven before turning back the Cougars (6-3).

Brock Reichner scored a career-high 26 points and Mililani High alum Rashaun Broadus added 17 for BYU.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Coby Karl scored 20 points and Eric Lane added 13, including a 3-pointer with 12:14 left that put the Broncos (6-4) ahead to stay at 48-46. The Dons (4-8) fell in the consolation game of the ASU Hoops Classic.

RUSTON, La. — Paul Millsap scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the host Bulldogs (7-5) cruised past the NAIA Bulldogs (2-8).

FAIRFAX, Va. — Ashleigh Newman scored 21 points, and Marissa Coleman added 20 points and 10 rebounds, powering the visiting Terrapins (10-1) past the Patriots (4-5), who shot just 20 percent from the field.
