The year 2005 is about to come to a close, and thousands still suffering the aftershocks of its varied natural disasters won't mourn its passing.

From the survivors of the tsunami and earthquakes in the Indian Ocean basin to those trying to rebuild their lives after America's hurricane calamities, many yearn for a gentler 2006.

For the rest of us, these global tragedies may have overshadowed the accounts of want closer to home. The Advertiser thus found it more important than ever to draw attention to our own neighbors in need through the annual Christmas Fund drive.

Through a series of stories by staff writer Loren Moreno, our readers have learned about many of their struggles, stories that sadden the heart.

Fortunately, they are matched by stories of generosity from donors to our fund, which surged past the $150,000 mark, even surpassing our total last year. The impact is even greater, since an anonymous "Secret Santa" generously matches the first $25 of each gift.

We and our partners at Helping Hands Hawai'i, First Hawaiian Bank and the Community Clearinghouse are deeply grateful.

And we know that, as our Islands cope with rising living costs and a worsening affordable housing crisis, thousands of people could use your continued support (see box).
