Woman accused of child abuse pleads not guilty

HILO, Hawai'i — A Big Island woman accused of involvement in what police describe as a severe child abuse case of an 11-year-old Puna girl pleaded not guilty today to five felony charges in Hilo Circuit Court, including attempted murder by omission.

Judge Glenn Hara set trial for Hyacinth L. Poouahi, 38, for May 15. Poouahi is being held at the Hawai'i Community Correctional Center in lieu of $25,000 bail.

The case involves a girl who was removed from Poouahi's 'Ainaloa subdivision home on Feb. 7 suffering from burns, broken bones and festering wounds. The injuries were so severe that the girl, who was 10 at the time, was left in a coma for weeks.

A doctor who treated the girl told police the girl was malnourished and dehydrated, and had cigarette burns, and other injuries that suggested she had been bound, court records say.

Poouahi has said the girl's injuries were largely self-inflicted, and that the child would injure herself and then pick at the wounds. However, another girl who lives in the home told police she saw Poouahi, Poouahi's live-in boyfriend and Poouahi's 14-year-old son "beat up" the girl, according to court records.

Poouahi was indicted last week on five felony charges, including kidnapping, terroristic threatening, first-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a minor. The attempted murder by omission count alleges Poouahi witnessed assaults and injuries to the child, and had a duty to seek help for the girl.

Deputy Prosecutor Rick Damerville said the case is not closed, and additional charges against other people involved in the case are possible.
