'Swords win fifth game in a row

Chris Reaves scored 23 points to lead Chaminade to a 95-70 victory over Saint John's (Collegeville, Minn.) yesterday in a non-conference game at McCabe Gym.

Corey Campbell added 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Silverswords (6-4), who won their fifth in a row. Dylan McCune contributed 15 points and Zack Whiting had 13 points and seven rebounds for Chaminade.

Tyler Westman led Saint John's (5-4) with 13 points.

UH-HILO TRIUMPHS

Justin Griffin scored 17 points, including the go-ahead free throws, and made a steal that sealed Hawai'i-Hilo's 64-62 victory over Cheyney (Pa.) University last night in the Hilo Christmas Classic at Hilo civic.

Terrance Troupe added 16 points and Justin Dobson 10 for the Vulcans (9-3), who led 40-21 with 1:31 left in the half.

Cheyney chipped away, tying the score at 62 with 1:30 to play. Griffin's two free throws with 27 seconds left made it 64-62, and his steal with nine seconds to play sealed the victory.

HPU SUCCUMBS

Jack Rother scored 15 points as Morningside College (Iowa) defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 71-59, last night in a non-conference game at Blaisdell Arena.

Morningside (12-2) led 30-29 at the half before pulling away.

Audrius Peciukas had 20 points and 12 rebounds for HPU (2-10).

PUNAHOU ADVANCES

Miah Ostrowski scored 12 points and Brandon Kapana 10 as Punahou beat Kalaheo, 58-42, last night to advance to the semifinals of the Fifth Annual Punahou Holiday Classic.

The Buffanblu, who outscored the Mustangs 32-12 in the second half, will play Mercer Island (Wash.) in tonight's feature game at 7:30.

IOLANI WINS IN OREGON

Four-time defending Hawai'i champion Iolani defeated Lakeridge (Ore.), 59-47, yesterday in the consolation bracket of the Les Schwab Invitational in Portland, Ore.

Kawika Shoji scored 13 points for the Raiders (7-5), who led by one point at the half. Vinny Nip added 11 points and Liloa Nobriga 10.


WRESTLING

IOLANI TOURNEY TODAY

The Iolani Invitational — with 22 boys wrestling teams from seven states participating — starts today and continues through tomorrow at Iolani School.

Among the 10 Mainland teams is Phoenix (N.Y.), which is coached by former NCAA champion and Syracuse University head coach Gene Mills.

Hawai'i teams participating are Damien, Kahuku, Kamehameha, Leilehua, Moanalua, Pac-Five, Punahou, Radford, Saint Louis, Waipahu and Iolani.

Action begins at 10 a.m. both days, with the championship finals set for 7 p.m. tomorrow. Admission is free.
