POLICE BEAT
Heavy rain leads to evacuation on O'ahu

Advertiser Staff

Police today recommended that a family evacuate their house on Ahuwale Place in 'Aina Haina Valley due to unstable soil conditions on the hillside above their home.

Peter Hirai, plans and operations officer for O'ahu Civil Defense, said heavy rains over the weekend dislodged some rocks and soil and that there were concerns that more rain might cause additional, larger problems.

Agency workers and police were assessing the situation this morning, Hirai said.

"We asked the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to assist but they declined since the land on the hillside above the home is private property," Hirai said.

A flash flood watch is in effect for O'ahu and heavy rains were forecast for later today.
