ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
'Hide and Seek' bides time at No. 1

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Robert De Niro's fright flick "Hide and Seek" topped the weekend box office with $22 million, fending off a rush of Academy Awards contenders, the Associated Press reported.

"Are We There Yet?" slipped to second place with $17 million, lifting its 10-day total to $39.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Director Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby" led Oscar hopefuls with $11.8 million, coming in at No. 3 during its first weekend of wide release. "The Aviator" was sixth with $7.5 million, "Coach Carter" was fourth with $8 million and "Meet the Fockers" fifth with $7.6 million.

Connect with authors via online courses

If you've often felt, when reading a book, that you'd love some time with the writer to further explore the topic, or to get a nagging question answered, check out the author-led reading groups that are part of Barnes & Noble's free online "University" courses at www.barnesandnoble.com. (click on B&N University near the top of the home page).

Groups focus on a particular book (mostly contemporary fiction, but there's also a classics division) and offer the chance to access moderated discussions with the author via a message board, and to post questions and discussion points on the board.

A four-week discussion focused on Ann Patchett's "Bel Canto," an Advertiser Book Club choice in 2003, launches on Monday.

FINAL WORD

Johnny Depp | when asked if there's any role he's itching to play:

"What comes into mind at the moment is, like, Mae West, although I probably wouldn't do it, you know. I'm a little too old for that role now. Maybe Carol Channing."
