David Maeva is no longer the head football coach at Kaiser High School, saying last night he was asked to resign Jan. 21.

Maeva, a former Kamehameha Schools and University of Hawai'i standout, recently completed his third season at the Kaiser helm, guiding the Cougars to their first O'ahu Interscholastic Association playoff berth since 1997.

Maeva said he went into athletic director Ricky Shimokawa's office Jan. 21 for his post-season evaluation and was asked about his coaching plans for next season. All OIA coaches work under one-year contracts that are renewed pending a post-season evaluation.

Maeva said he told Shimokawa he could not give him a concrete answer until a court case regarding his daughter's custody is resolved later this month.

"I told him I just don't know yet, because it depends on the judge's schedule," Maeva said. "But Ricky said he needed to know right now, that day. I was like, 'Whoah.' "

Maeva said he did not want to resign at that moment, "because to me, resigning is like quitting and I don't like to quit."

Maeva then said Shimokawa said he didn't want to fire him, so he asked him to resign.

"I just said, 'Well, however you want to phrase it, I guess,' " said Maeva, who told his team of the change Jan. 25.

Shimokawa could not be reached for comment.
