Mid-Pacific honors Botelho, Hanta

Don "Spud" Botelho, Interscholastic League of Honolulu executive director, and Carlton Hanta, a former professional baseball player in Japan, will be inducted into the inaugural class of the Mid-Pacific Institute Athletics Hall of Fame.
Pro football Hall of Famer Marv Levy will be the honorary guest speaker at "A Night of Stars," a fund-raiser for Mid-Pacific Institute and its M-Club, an organization that fosters unity and pride in student-athletes, their parents and alumni, in support of MPI athletics.
The ceremony will be held Feb. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom.
Botelho spent 28 years as athletic director at Mid-Pacific and was inducted into the University of Hawai'i Circle of Honor in 2000. He was a running back, quarterback, punter and place-kicker for the Rainbow football team from 1954 to 1957,
Hanta led the University of Houston to the College World Series in 1953 and was the first baseball player of Japanese descent from Hawai'i to be selected by the NCAA as a collegiate All-American. He was an infielder for the Nankai Hawks from 1958 to 1961 and for the Chunichi Dragons in 1962.
