UH-Manoa approved for disaster aid

President George W. Bush has signed a disaster declaration for the county of Honolulu, making the University of Hawai'i eligible for federal disaster aid as a result of the devastating Oct. 30 Manoa stream flood that did $76 million in damage to university buildings.

"That means UH is going to get some money for the flood damage," said Russell Pang, a spokesman for Gov. Linda Lingle, who was notified of Bush's action this morning.

University administrators were still trying to determine if it would be advantageous to accept federal aid, or if it would cost more in the long run because taking on the aid could mean that liability insurance rates will go up steeply.

The state's flood insurance policy will cover about $25 million in damages.
