Pacific volleyball's Metz shines in loss

 •  Dignam an inspiration to younger sprinters

Pacific (Calif.) senior outside hitter Bryson Metz (Kamehameha '01 of 'Aiea) had 10 kills on 21 attempts, added one service ace, six digs and four blocks in a 3-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara Friday.

Metz put together two service runs that combined for seven offensive points in the first set, which the Tigers won.

Senior opposite hitter Brian Zodrow (Saint Louis '01) had nine kills, two blocks and five digs for Pacific.

• Princeton senior middle hitter Sean Vitousek (Hawai'i Prep '01 of Kamuela) had 10 kills and eight blocks in a 3-1 victory over Hope International Thursday evening.

Men's Basketball

• Washington State freshman point guard Derrick Low scored a career-high 13 points, including going 4 for 4 on 3-pointers, and added a career-best six assists, one rebound and one steal in a 70-63 upset of No. 11 Arizona Saturday.

Low, a 2004 Iolani graduate, helped the Cougars snap a 38-game losing streak to the Wildcats. He played 39 minutes, the longest on his team.

Washington State (9-9, 4-5 Pac-10) last beat the Wildcats on Jan. 30, 1986, 65-63 in overtime in Pullman. WSU broke a 20-game losing streak in Tucson and defeated a ranked opponent for the first time in 49 tries, according to the school's Web site.

• Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) junior guard Branden Kawazoe (Waiakea of Hilo) scored 11 points in an 87-73 loss to Linfield Friday.

Men's Swimming

• UC Irvine freshman Randall Tom (Seabury Hall '04 of Wailuku) earned his second Big West Swimmer of the Week honor Jan. 26 after breaking a 15-year-old school record in the 100-yard butterfly (48.87) on his way to two individual victories and two relay victories against UC San Diego.

He set a pool record in the 200 butterfly (1:48.97) and another Anteater record in the 200 medley relay (1:31.55), having blazed to a 22.01 in his butterfly leg of the race. The previous relay record had stood for 13 years.

Tom became the first male to win the award twice this season; he previously won the award on Nov. 10.

Tom won the 200 fly in 1:53.22 in a meet against Pacific Saturday.

• UC Irvine freshman Chelsea Nagata (Maui '04 of Kahului) won three individual events in a meet against UC Davis Friday.

Nagata won the 100-yard back stroke (57.31), 50 freestyle (23.88) and the 100 butterfly (56.68). She was also a part of the 200 medley relay team that broke its school record in 1:45.33.

Saturday, the relay team broke its record again in 1:45.07 in a meet against Pacific Saturday. Nagata also won the 50 free in 23.70 in Saturday's meet.

Women's Basketball

• Menlo (Calif.) junior guard Shannon Riley (Maryknoll '02) led the team with 18 points and seven assists in a 76-60 win over Cal State East Bay Saturday.

Freshman guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) came off the bench to score 12 points.

Women's Tennis

• Rice senior Tracie Chong (Iolani '01 of Hawai'i Kai) defeated Maryland's Jennifer Dent, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles Saturday.

Chong teamed with Dominique Karas to defeat Neda Mihneva and Veronika Subertova, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.

• Cleveland State sophomore Sarah Galon (Leilehua '03 of Wai'anae) defeated St. Bonaventure's Ann Perevenzetseva, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 13-11, and tallied a 6-3, 6-4 win over Renee James of Robert Morris at No. 1 singles Sunday.

Galon also won both of her doubles matches at No. 1.

Riflery

• Ohio State senior Ryan Kohatsu (Waiakea of Hilo) took top honors at the Roger Withrow Invitational last weekend, shooting an 1,173 aggregate score as Ohio State finished ninth in the competition of 11 teams. Kohatsu won smallbore with a score of 591 and finished 10th in air rifle with 582.

• Akron freshman Shannon Kohatsu (Waiakea '04 of Hilo), Ryan's sister, scored a 566 out of a possible 600 points and was third on her team in air riflery as it placed second in a quadrangular meet at Penn State Saturday.
