ART OF RICE
Is rice ingrained in your own Island life?
Advertiser Staff
Tomorrow is the deadline to submit your entry for The Island Art of Rice, a showcase of Islanders' writings about rice, to be published in The Advertiser Island Life section Feb. 20.
Submissions will be judged on the quality of writing, creativity and uniqueness.
We are looking for insightful work in keeping with the spirit and theme of the Honolulu Academy of Arts' upcoming "Art of Rice" exhibit, which explores rice as cultural metaphor.
Awards: Three winners receive family memberships to the Academy of Arts, free admission to the "Art of Rice" exhibit and rice-related prizes. Deadline: Postmarked Feb. 4. Additional rules: Closed to employees of The Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Judges' decisions final. Winners must sign a contract granting rights to use the work in print and online. Send entries to:
• The Honolulu Advertiser, The Island Art of Rice, Island Life, P.O. Box 3110, Honolulu, HI 96802. • E-mail islandlife@honoluluadvertiser.com (put "Island Art of Rice entry" in the subject field). • Fax 525-8055. Include name, address, daytime telephone and e-mail address.
Submit a short essay, memoir, fictional story or poem of 500 words or fewer on any aspect of Hawai'i's "rice ways." Think back to New Year's mochi-pounding or sushi-making at Grandma's house. Reflect on the central place of the rice cooker in Island life. Ponder life without rice.
The author of "The Art of Rice: Spirit and Sustenance in Asia" Roy W. Hamilton is curating the rice-themed Honolulu art exhibit.
