Weekend promises to be drier, breezy

By Curtis Lum

The weather system that brought heavy rains to the Islands and caused minor flooding this past week is slowly weakening and drier weather is in the forecast for this weekend, the National Weather Service said.

The leftovers of a dark, wet week provided sloshy entertainment for a man and his best friend at Kailua Beach Park yesterday. The weekend weather will be drier.

Maui, Kaho'olawe and the Big Island were under a flash-flood watch through last night, but the weather service said the watch likely would be canceled today. Forecaster Jeff Powell said there were no reports of major flooding on those islands.

"We've been watching radar, and there's been rain here and there, but nothing in the way of damage," Powell said.

All islands were on a flash-flood watch earlier yesterday as the remnants of the trough that brought the wet weather lingered. By the afternoon, however, trade winds returned to the western part of the state and things began to dry up.

"We can still get some showers, but we think that the threat for flooding is over for those islands," Powell said.

Trade winds and drier weather also were expected to return to the rest of the state this weekend or early next week, he said.
