Four free throws in the final 17 seconds helped Hawai'i-Hilo defeat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 96-93, in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at the Hilo civic.

Osadonor Esene scored 38 points and Alex Cabagnot 28 for the Vulcans, who improved to 19-2 overall and 7-2 in the PacWest.

Austin Smylie scored 28 points for the Seasiders, who suffered their first loss in the PacWest and are now 11-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference.

BYUH had a 93-92 lead and possession of the ball, but Cabagnot made a steal and was fouled. He made two free throws to put the Vulcans ahead 94-93 with 17 seconds remaining.

The Seasiders' Thomas Watkins missed a 3-pointer with two seconds to play. Justin Dobson rebounded and was immediately fouled. He sank two more free throws for the final margin.

Dobson finished with 14 points for UH-Hilo, which converted 30 of 35 foul shots.
