Japan professional Satoshi Shimouchi fired a 9-under-par 62 yesterday to take the first-round lead in the rain-delayed 27th Hawai'i Pearl Open at Pearl Country Club.

Japan's Takuya Ogawa was second at 65, followed by Don Berry and Tomo Takahashi at 66.

Only 95 of 192 golfers completed their rounds before play was suspended by darkness at the PCC course, shortened to a par-71 when the par-4 7th hole was turned into a par-3 because of a flooded fairway.

Among those who finished their rounds were Sakura Yokomine, the 2004 JLPGA Rookie of the Year, who shot a 4-under 67 and was tied for fifth, and Ai Ogawa, another JLPGA member and Takuya's sister, who shot a 3-over 73.

The third female in the field, 15-year-old Ayaka Kaneko, a student at Sacred Hearts Academy, teed off in the afternoon and did not complete her round.

Two-time defending and four-time champion Gregory Meyer of Hawai'i opened with a 69.

The first round is scheduled to be completed this morning with the second round to follow.
