No. 16 Hilo tops BYUH in PacWest

Brian Graham scored 19 points, including four free throws in the final 20 seconds, as No. 16 Hawai'i-Hilo rallied to beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 90-86, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference game at Hilo civic.

Osadonor Esene added 17 points, West Hawthorne had 13, Alex Cabagnot contributed 12 points and eight assists, and Justin Dobson finished with 11 points for Hilo (20-2, 8-2).

The Seasiders (11-6, 6-2) led 77-69 with five minutes remaining, but Hawthorne's third 3-pointer of the game tied it at 80 with 2:20 remaining. After the teams traded baskets, Hawthorne hit two free throws to put Hilo up for good.

BYUH's Michael Stowell had 23 points and Jake Chrisman added 21.

In a non-conference game, Chris Reaves scored a game-high 35 points to lift Chaminade past Grand Canyon College, 89-81, at Phoenix.

Chaminade is 13-8. Grand Canyon is 10-14.

Reaves hit 10 of 15 field-goal attempts, including 7 of 10 3-point shots.

BASEBALL

Longwood, HPU split doubleheader at Ke'ehi

Charlie Yarbrough batted 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as Longwood (Va.) beat Hawai'i Pacific, 7-3, to earn a split of a doubleheader yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Mario Ramirez allowed five hits and one run over six innings as HPU won the first game, 2-1. Spencer Omalza pitched the seventh for the save.

It was the first two games of the season for both teams.



Kansas beats UH-Hilo

Kodiak Quick pitched a three-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts as Kansas beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-0, yesterday at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.

It was the season opener for the Jayhawks. UH-Hilo is 0-6.



SOFTBALL

Oregon routs Hawai'i

Oregon scored seven runs in the first two innings en route to a 10-2 victory over Hawai'i yesterday in the Hawai'i Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Oregon is 3-0, Hawai'i 1-1.

Kristi Yoshizawa had two hits for the Rainbows.

In other games, Oregon beat Jacksonville, 5-0, and Jacksonville defeated Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne, 2-1.

The tournament ends today.



Hawai'i Pacific sweeps

Jamie Reyes hit a grand slam in the first game of Hawai'i Pacific's doubleheader sweep over Chaminade yesterday at Palolo Field.

Reyes' homer in the second inning helped the Sea Warriors to a 6-2 Pacific West Conference victory. Reyes went 2 for 3 and scored two runs.

In the second game, Anuhea Young went 3 for 4 in the Sea Warriors' 5-2 victory.
