Big Island police were searching yesterday for a prison escapee who allegedly fired shots at three men Saturday and is considered "extremely dangerous."
"They were confronted by Kalani who started firing off rounds," said Big Island Police Detective Bradley Freitas.
As the men drove away down Kamamalu Street, police said Kaohimaunu allegedly shot four to eight rounds at them from a .22-caliber rifle. Two to three shots hit the rear bumper of the men's vehicle and grazed the left rear passenger door, police said.
Kaohimaunu is described as 5 feet 10 and about 160 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. He was arrested Oct. 25 on charges of outstanding warrants, contempt of court violations and failure to appear for court hearings, Freitas said.
Big Island police yesterday asked that anyone with information about Kaohimaunu's whereabouts can call Freitas of the Kona Criminal Investigation Section at 326-4646, Ext. 228, or the police nonemergency number, 935-3311.
Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo.
