KANE'OHE WETLAND PROJECT Volunteers are needed Saturday to help the Sierra Club clear mangrove from a wetland to create habitat for endangered waterbirds at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i, Kane'ohe Bay. Because the base is a secured military facility, volunteers must provide Social Security number in advance and bring a signed waiver. MARSH RESTORATION The Hawai'i Nature Center is cleaning and restoring the Pouhala Marsh wetland habitat in Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Bring work gloves, water, hat, sunscreen, towel and change of clothes; covered footwear and long pants required. To sign up, contact Pauline Kawamata at 955-0100, ext. 18.

HALEAKALA WORK DAY The Friends of Haleakala needs volunteers to assist with removal of pine seedlings in the Hosmer's Grove and Pu'unianiau areas from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 19. Limited to 20 people; long pants and closed-toed shoes are required. Call Farley Jacob at (808) 248-7660.

FOREST RESTORATION PROJECT Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 26 to help the Department of Land and Natural Resources' Na Ala Hele Trails and Access O'ahu program maintain a two-acre forest area in Makiki Valley. Water, gloves and tools provided; bring long pants, long-sleeved shirt, shoes or boots, insect repellent and lunch. Meet at Makiki Forestry Baseyard. Call 973-9782.

FREE MULCH ON BIG ISLAND Help yourself to free mulch from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily at a new public pickup area near the Kealakehe Transfer Station, or from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Hilo Transfer Station. Loading assistance is available only at the Hilo location for $10 to $40 depending on vehicle size. Deliveries of large truckloads of mulch can be arranged by calling the Big Island Recycling representative at (808) 306-1876.

TOUR DE TRASH A free "Construction & Demolition" bus tour, part of the City and County of Honolulu Refuse Division's "Tour de Trash" program, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 17. Tour begins and ends at Kapolei Hale. Participants must show up 15 minutes prior to departure time. Call 692-5410 to register; for tour schedules and details, check the Web at www.opala.org.
