UH softball tops Washington, 7-6

Kristi Yoshizawa scored the winning run on a wild pitch to cap a three-run seventh inning as Hawai'i beat No. 9 Washington, 7-6, yesterday in the Hawai'i Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Washington took a 6-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings and led 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

With Ashley Ruff at third and Tara Harbert at second and two outs, Yoshizawa hit a looper, which the left fielder couldn't come up with. Both runners scored on the play and Yoshizawa wound up at second. She advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on the wild pitch.

Hawai'i's Jessica Morton pitched four shutout innings of relief.

In the third-place game, Shannon Tabion pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Rainbows (3-1) beat Jacksonville (1-4), 3-1.

In the championship game, Washington (4-1) beat No. 14 Oregon (3-1), 6-0.

Punahou is No. 1 seed in state tournament

Undefeated Punahou (14-0), the ILH champion, was awarded the top seed in the state softball Division I championship, which starts Wednesday at the University of Hawai'i's Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The tournament is sponsored by the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association and Data House.

Other seeded teams were league champions, No. 2 Waiakea (8-2) of the BIIF, No. 3 Kapolei (12-4) of the OIA and No. 4 Baldwin of (12-1) the MIL. The seeds receive a bye Wednesday. The championship game is Saturday.

Other teams in the tournament are Mililani (12-3), Kailua (14-1), Pearl City (12-3), Kaimuki (8-8) and Moanalua (8-6) of the OIA; Hilo (4-6) of the BIIF; Kaua'i (11-1) of the KIF and Lahainaluna (11-2) of the MIL.

In the Division II tournament also at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, Waipahu (13-3) meets Kamehameha-Maui (6-7) and Saint Francis (8-6) meets Konawaena (8-2) on Friday. The championship game is Saturday.

SOCCER

Mililani is top seed in state boys tournament

Four-time defending champion Mililani was awarded the top seed in the boys soccer state championships, which begin Wednesday at Kamehameha-Maui in Pukalani.

The tournament is sponsored by the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association and Meadow Gold Dairies.

The other seeds for the tournament are No. 2 Iolani (10-0-4), No. 3 King Kekaulike (7-1-1) and No. 4 Hawai'i Prep (16-0). The seeds draw a bye Wednesday.

The championship is Saturday.

Mililani (10-0-2), champion of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, will be joined by league members Leilehua (9-3-1), Pearl City (9-4-0), Kaiser (8-3-3) and Kapolei (9-1-2).

Iolani, champion of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, will be joined by runner-up Kamehameha (10-3-1).

Joining Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Hawai'i Prep are Kealakehe (13-3) and Honoka'a (12-4).

King Kekaulike is the Maui Interscholastic League champ and lone state tournament representative. Waimea (5-0-2) is the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion and state representative.

BASEBALL

Kansas drops UH-Hilo to 0-8 after sweep

Kansas' Mike Zagurski combined with two relief pitchers to shut out Hawai'i-Hilo, 6-0, and complete a doubleheader sweep at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona, yesterday.

In the first game, Kansas held off Hilo, 7-6.

Kansas is 3-0, Hilo 0-8.

Kansas' Richie Price went 6 for 8 in the doubleheader.

Zagurski (1-0) struck out eight and allowed three hits in seven innings. Logan Murphy pitched the eighth and Michael Fitch the ninth.

In the seven-inning first game, Kansas took a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the final inning.

Hilo's David Chu went 3 for 3 and scored two runs.

Sea Warriors sweep Longwood at Ke'ehi

Chase Nakamura went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs to help Hawai'i Pacific to a 6-3 victory over Longwood (Va.) and a sweep of a doubleheader at Ke'ehi Lagoon Field yesterday.

The Sea Warriors scored six runs in the sixth inning en route to a 9-2 victory in the first game.

Hawai'i Pacific is 2-1. Longwood is 1-2.

In the second game, HPU's Anthony Ganigan pitched a seven-inning complete game, striking out five, walking two, and allowing six hits and two earned runs.

Tyler Jefferson also had two hits for HPU and scored two runs. Jay Baptista hit a solo home run.

In the first game, HPU's Greg Benoit was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Pierce Magalallan pitched a seven-inning complete game for the victory. He allowed two runs, three hits, struck out four and walked four.

Rainbow individual game tickets on sale

Tickets for University of Hawai'i individual baseball games go on sale today at the Stan Sheriff Center box office.

Ticket prices for games against Alabama, Florida State, Rice and the Rainbow Baseball Tournament will be $7 for seats in the orange and blue sections, $6 for adults in the red section, $5 for seniors and $3 for students ages 4-18, as well as UH students.

Prices for all other games drop by $1, but remain the same for students.

UH is also promoting "Season Ticket Holder Appreciation Weekend," in the season-opening series against Alabama, Thursday to Sunday.

Any UH season-ticket holders of baseball, basketball, football or volleyball qualify for a two-for-one ticket offer at the Stan Sheriff Center box office.

Correction

Kapolei's Ka'ili Smith was the player who hit the first-inning double and went 3 for 4 with a triple in Saturday's OIA softball championship victory over Mililani.

Another player was credited in yesterday's story.
