9,900 residents can still claim tax refunds

Advertiser Staff

April 15 is the deadline for 9,900 Hawai'i residents to file for $12.7 million in unclaimed federal income tax refunds from 2001, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

The IRS estimates that half of those eligible for refunds would receive more than $525 per person.

The individuals who have money coming to them failed to file an income tax return in 2001. In some cases they had taxes withheld from their wages, or made tax payments on self-employed earnings, but had too little income to require filing a tax return, the IRS said. Some also may be eligible for the refundable earned-income tax credit.

"The window is closing for 2001 refunds," said IRS Commissioner Mark Everson. "As soon as you send us your tax return, you'll get your money. But if you don't file, you won't get anything.
