ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Fat Tuesday in Nu'uanu

Advertiser Staff and News Services

We're not suggesting you cancel any trips to the real Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans for it. But tonight's fifth annual Nu'uanu Mardi Gras Celebration in downtown is still a raucous — albeit smaller-scale — Fat Tuesday tradition worth checking out.

Nu'uanu Avenue (between King and Pauahi Streets) will be closed to traffic from 6:30 to 10 p.m. for block-party food booths, live music, street performers, palm readers and the official "Smallest Parade in Honolulu."

Arrive in costume and you'll be given a kazoo and allowed to march behind the live Dixieland band and motorless float, too.

Some of the entertainment includes Downtown Charley and the Humbones, The Swingin' Tradewinds Jass Band, and the African drumming group Jammarek. Jugglers, clowns, giant puppets and palm readers will also be roving throughout the event.

A costume contest will take place on the Mauka Stage at 9 p.m.

'Boogeyman' smothers 'Hide and Seek' for No. 1

"Boogeyman" frightened the other horror thriller, "Hide and Seek," to top the box office for its debut weekend, reports Zap2it.com. The movie earned approximately $19.5 million, according to estimates by Exhibitor Relations. "The Wedding Date" opened in second place with $11 million, followed closely behind by the Ice Cube family comedy "Are We There Yet?" with $10.4 million.

"Hide and Seek," the previous week's box-office champ, fell to fourth position with $8.9 million.

FINAL WORD

Faye Dunaway | saying she would have considered being on a reality TV show if they had been around at the start of her acting career. Dunaway won a best-actress Oscar in 1977 for "Network."

"The only thing I said 'no' to was the soap, because I thought I might get bad habits."
