BYUH women win for 103rd time in row

The top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawai'i women's tennis team defeated Chaminade, 9-0, yesterday to tie its own record for consecutive dual-match victories at 103.

The Seasiders swept all the matches.

BYUH can break the NCAA II record in its next match at UH-Hilo on Feb. 18.

Since becoming a Division II member in 1998 — BYUH was an NAIA member prior — the Seasiders' record in Division II is 206-1.

BYUH first set the record from 1998 to 2001. Its last loss was to Lynn (Fla.) at the NCAA Division II National Championships in May 2001.



SOFTBALL

'Bows' Yoshizawa honored by WAC

University of Hawai'i third baseman Kristi Yoshizawa was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week after her performance in the Hawai'i Paradise Classic.

Yoshizawa, a junior from Rancho Cordova, Calif., earned all-tournament honors after batting 5 for 10 with two runs scored.

She hit a tying, two-run double in the seventh inning against No. 9 Washington, and scored the winning run on a passed ball.



SOCCER

Ching will play for U.S. in Cup qualifier

Hale'iwa native Brian Ching was selected to the U.S. national soccer team's 23-man travel roster for the team's World Cup Qualifying match against Trinidad & Tobago tomorrow.

The match will be broadcast live on ESPN2 at 9:30 a.m. Hawai'i time.

Ching, 26, scored two goals in four World Cup qualifying matches last year. He is a Kamehameha Schools graduate.



BASKETBALL

Hilo guard Cabagnot honored by PacWest

University of Hawai'i-Hilo guard Alex Cabagnot was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for his performance in two home victories over Brigham Young-Hawai'i.

Cabagnot, a senior from Los Angeles, had 28 points, six steals and five assists in a 96-93 win Thursday. He was 9 of 10 from the field and 8 of 8 from the free-throw line.

On Saturday, he scored 12 points and dished out eight assists in a 90-86 win.



BASEBALL

HPU routs Longwood at Ke'ehi Lagoon

Spencer Omalza pitched a seven-hitter with three strikeouts as Hawai'i Pacific routed Longwood (Va.), 15-2, yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon field.

Brandon Sato, Tyler Jefferson and Bryan Daguio each drove in two runs for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 4-1. Sato and Grandon Costa each scored three runs.

Longwood fell to 1-4.

HPU routs Longwood at Ke'ehi Lagoon

Clint Schambach gave up one hit over seven innings and pinch hitter Mike Dudley hit a three-run homer in the ninth as Kansas beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 12-3, last night at Francis Wong Stadium.

Matt Baty, Ryne Price and Andy Scholl each drove in two runs for the Jayhawks (4-0).

Hilo dropped to 0-9.
