Photographer Mozo drowns on North Shore

Advertiser Staff

Well-known surf photographer Jon Mozo drowned on the North Shore today.

Lifeguards said Mozo drowned at 2 p.m. at Ehukai Beach Park.

Bodyboarders alerted lifeguards that a swimmer was in trouble, officials said. An off-duty lifeguard who was in the water at the time dived down and found a man with "massive head injuries."

The off-duty lifeguard and other lifeguards who responded brought Mozo ashore but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at Kahuku Hospital.

On June 10, 1993, Mozo was bitten by a tiger shark while surfing at Goats, a spot on the North Shore. Friends put tourniquets on his ankles to prevent him from bleeding to death. He received more than 100 stitches and was back surfing in two months.
