Chow will leave USC for position with Titans

LOS ANGELES — USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow is expected to announce as soon as today that he is leaving USC for a similar job with the NFL's Tennessee Titans, thus ending one of the most successful coaching partnerships in college football history.

Chow confirmed yesterday that Titans coach Jeff Fisher had offered him the team's offensive coordinator's job and that the two sides were "working through the particulars."

Chow said he expected to tell Fisher that he would take the job.

Chow will be paid nearly $1 million annually, plus incentives, in his first job in pro football after 31 seasons at BYU, North Carolina State and USC.

"This is a tremendous opportunity — a great, great opportunity," Chow said yesterday, before he departed with his family for Utah to see off one of his children who is beginning a Mormon mission in Hawai'i.

Chow is a Punahou School graduate and former Wailalua High head football coach.

Chow, 58, joined USC's staff in January 2001, shortly after Pete Carroll was hired to replace Paul Hackett as coach. After finishing 6-6 in their first season, Carroll and Chow gave the Trojans a nearly unbeatable combination.

Chow helped USC win three consecutive Bowl Championship Series bowl games and two consecutive national titles.

He also tutored Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart as the Trojans compiled a record of 36-3.
