Punahou rebounds; Iolani takes ILH title

 •  OIA Basketball: OIA tourney has no slam dunk favorite

Punahou's boys basketball team rebounded from Saturday's upset loss to University High with a 52-36 victory over Saint Louis last night, but it proved to be too late as Iolani clinched its fifth straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship with a 76-34 rout of Damien two hours earlier.

SPENCER McLACHLIN

Iolani, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 13-0 in the ILH and earned the league's bye in the state tournament Feb. 23 to 26.

Third-ranked Punahou (11-2) clinched second place and a state tournament berth by beating Saint Louis (8-5). The other six ILH teams will enter a tournament next week to determine the league's third state berth.

Punahou will end the regular season tomorrow at Iolani, with tipoff set for 6 p.m.

"It's still a big game," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said. "We'd love to go to states on a winning note, and I'm sure Iolani wants to stay undefeated, so both teams still have a lot to play for."

The Buffanblu played last night like a team that needed to right its ship after a stunning 56-52 loss to UHS (6-7) on Saturday.

In that defeat, three of Punahou's top scorers — guard Danny Cho, wing Spencer McLachlin and post Kasey Ko — combined for 12 points. Last night, McLachlin sank two 3-point baskets in the first period to help the Buffanblu take a 14-7 lead. He finished with 13 points, after scoring just three on Saturday.

"That night and the night after, that's probably the worst time I ever had trying to sleep," said McLachlin, a 6-foot-6 sophomore. "I kept flashing back to how bad I played. I didn't want to play like that ever again."

Saint Louis rallied early in the second quarter and Kulia Aiona made a steal and layup to put the Crusaders up 16-14, but Miah Ostrowski scored 10 points in a 13-4 run as Punahou took a 27-20 lead into halftime.

The Buffanblu then opened the second half with a 16-4 run to build a 43-24 lead that proved insurmountable.

Ostrowski led all scorers with 22 points. Jack Miller scored 16 points to lead Saint Louis.

In the teams' first meeting Jan. 22, Miller scored 27 points, including 13 in the first period.
