Landmark theater's demolition nears

By Andrew Gomes
Advertiser Staff Writer

The old Waikiki III theater on Kalakaua Avenue, closed for more than two years, is to be torn down in the next few weeks to make way for a long-planned two-story retail complex.

Retail space will replace the Waikiki III theater, as shown in this artist's rendering. The illuminated "W-A-I-K-I-K-I" sign will be reused, presiding over a two-story retail complex that will also retain decorative grilles and include displays of vintage photos.

Developer Robertson Properties Group, a California-based affiliate of Consolidated Theatres, yesterday announced the start of construction for the $10 million project to house Foot Locker, California Pizza Kitchen, Whaler's Market, 80 kiosks, and a steak-and-seafood restaurant.

The replacement building will reuse the theater's illuminated landmark "W-A-I-K-I-K-I" sign as well as restored decorative grilles. Also to be displayed will be vintage theater photos and movie-themed artwork.

The project is expected to be complete in spring of 2006. An entertainment use is still being sought for the former I-MAX theater building. Tenants are also being sought for the former Waikiki I and II theaters on Seaside Avenue.
