Hannemann OKs repeal of lease law

By Robbie Dingeman
Advertiser City Hall Writer

Mayor Mufi Hannemann yesterday signed into law a bill to repeal the city ordinance that allowed mandatory lease-to-fee conversion of condominiums.

He did so with about 100 supporters looking on in the newly renovated Mission Memorial Auditorium. The backers included trustees from the Kamehameha Schools and the Queen Lili'uokalani Trust, members of the Small Landowners Association and the Royal Order of Kamehameha. It was the first bill signed by Hannemann since he took office on Jan. 2.

Hannemann said government should not dictate to private landowners when and how they should sell their land. But he said he would be disappointed if any landowner used the repeal as a tool to evict people.
